The Problem Was Not A Broken Encryption Algorithm Developers attributed the issue to implementation and validation errors rather than demonstrating that the underlying zero-knowledge cryptography had been defeated. That distinction is important. A blockchain can use sophisticated privacy technology and still contain flaws in the rules determining which transactions are accepted. Exchanges and network participants responded with precautionary restrictions while the team investigated. Because shielded funds do not reveal the same public transaction information as ordinary transparent blockchain transfers, outsiders cannot easily determine every movement involving the unauthorized tokens.
